What is IP Rating?

If you've started looking for some exciting electrical goods to deck out your garden with this summer, you may have noticed that most things such as lights, sensors, alarms and heaters, all have an IP Rating. The IP rating is an important figure to consider, especially for items that will be used in bathrooms or outdoors. So what is IP Rating?

IP stands for 'Ingress Protection'

IP ratings are defined in international standard EN 60529 (British BS EN 60529:1992, European IEC 60509:1989). They are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies (tools, dirt etc) and moisture. The first digit represents the level of protection offered from solids, and the 2nd digit represents the level of protection offered from liquids. The level of protection increases with the number, so an undamaged IP68 rated light would usually be perfectly safe at the bottom of a pond, or completely protected from dust in an industrial environment.

We've put all the numbers in to a handy table, so it's quick and easy to find what IP Rating you need.
