What is an IP Rating?

If you’ve started looking for some exciting new electrical goods to spruce up your home, you may have noticed something called an IP rating popping up. You might not realise it, but if you've ever purchased an electrical item in the past, chances are you’ve come across an IP rating before.

Although we often ignore these, it’s important to understand what they mean, particularly for those of you who are planning on placing your new item outside or in an area which is exposed to liquids, such as the bathroom. Everything from lighting, heaters, alarms and beyond have an IP rating which is designed to help you select the right product for you. So, whether you’re hearing about IP ratings for the first time, or just need a little reminder, Juice are here to help.

So, what is an IP Rating?

IP actually stands for 'Ingress Protection'.

IP ratings are used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of electrical products against intrusion from foreign bodies (tools, dirt, water etc).

The first digit represents the level of protection offered from solids, and the second digit represents the level of protection offered from liquids.

The higher the number, the greater the protection. Meaning an IP rating of 68 (the highest possible rating) would be safe at the bottom of a pond, or completely protected from dust in an industrial setting.

We know it can be confusing so, we’ve put it all together for you in a handy table to help you understand. Check it out below and choose the IP rating that’s right for you.
