An optical smoke alarm (also called photo-electric smoke alarm) works using the light scatter principle. The alarm contains a pulsed infrared LED which pulses a beam of light into the sensor chamber every 10 seconds to check for smoke particles. Once a certain percentage of the transmitted light has been blocked by the smoke, a fire is signalled.

If there is a fire in the vicinity of the alarm, the convected thermal energy from the flame raises the temperature of a heat-sensitive element in the heat detector. Once this occurs, the element triggers an alarm which then sounds, alerting anyone within ear-shot of the device
